Saw one of those “Who should you fight?” posts stating you could probably beat John Laurens in a fight.

Looks like it’s time for me to remind everyone that Laurens once got shot in his right shoulder during a battle, proceeded to switch his sword to his left (non-dominant) hand, and then killed ten men.

Holy fuck?? this is??

“On October 4, Laurens was involved in the Battle of Germantown, as Washington’s forces surprise-attacked the British north of Philadelphia. At one point, the Americans were stymied by a large stone mansion occupied by the enemy. After several attempts to take the building failed, Laurens and a French volunteer, the chevalier Duplessis-Mauduit, came up with their own daring plan. They gathered some straw to set on fire and place at the front door of the house. According to another officer’s account of Laurens’s actions that day, “He rushed up to the door of Chew’s House, which he forced partly open, and fighting with his sword with one hand, with the other he applied the wood work a flaming brand, and what is very remarkable, retired from under the tremendous fire of the house, with but a very slight wound.” Laurens was struck by a musket ball that went through part of his right shoulder, and he made a sling for his arm from his uniform sash.”

The funny thing is that this wasn’t even the battle I was talking about.  Laurens was just that reckless and badass all the time.  Here’s the encounter I was referring to (Henry is likely discussing the Battle of Coosawhatchie):

“When I write to Colo. Laurens, he shall be informed of your very kind remembrance, poor fellow he received a bullet through his right arm at the head of 200. Horse, took his sword into the left hand, kept 400 of the Enemy at Bay, killed their Major Commandant, two captains & 6 or 7. Men, & secured his retreat with the loss of two Men killed, himself & three or 4 more wounded_ this relation I received from a sensible french Officer who left Charles Town the 8th. May_” - Henry Laurens to Horatio Gates, June 29, 1779:

They won’t teach you this in your classes, but look it up: Hamilton was wearing his glasses. Why, if not to take deadly aim? It’s him or me, the world will never be the same! I had only one thought before the slaughter…

sorry for the lack of updates i’ve been super busy becoming obsessed with this broadway musical that i’ve never seen.

I’ve been drawing ALL DAY, which is a big deal for me because I hadn’t actually drawn anything in like two years? So: good news is I am not THAT rusty (though my scan is, because the image quality is crap? sorry), and apparently listening to Broadway Cast Albums unlocks art blocks like magic.

    1. Portrait based on that picture of Lin Manuel Miranda as Hamilton that a lot of people have already drawn but I couldn’t help myself: the angle and his expression were too great to pass up.  Markers + ink wash + pencil + ballpoint pen (mostly for the hair) Resemblance is a liiiitle off but I just got tired of looking at it to be honest.

    2. Eliza and Hamilton on their wedding after listening to Helpless obsessively on repeat.

    3. Angelica I adore you and I shall draw you again and again until I can produce something worthy of the GLORY that is Satisfied. I am not crazy about the lineart but I am quite proud of the inking here. That hair was so much fun to do, although not as much fun as…

    4. Miss Maria Reynolds - I erm. Took some liberties with the hair. Whatever, it was fun. Hair is my favourite thing to draw, and it shows.

Writing rap songs is about flow, about one word blending seamlessly into the next and creating a thing that is possible to perform in a way that feels natural. Lin does that. The tricky thing about fast raps is not really the delivery of them; it’s the writing of them, with consonants close enough together that you don’t trip up over them. Something like “Guns and Ships” is impressive because every time he would give me a part, it was already easy to do. That’s a good starting point. And then the fact that he manages to have complicated rhyme schemes all the time. There are internal rhymes in most of the stuff.

And it’s different for every character. Each character rhymes differently. The way that they are rapping contributes to their story. George Washington raps in a very on-beat, metronomic way because he is focused and driven and always moving forward. Lafayette has this great arc where he starts out rhyming words that don’t really rhyme and he can’t really figure it out. As he becomes comfortable — and a general — he can do this really complicated, technical, fast stuff. It’s like him mastering this language. Jefferson’s raps are so bouncy and all over the place, and part of it’s because I’m playing him — but Lin was writing with this interesting kind of West Coast feel:

[Raps from “Washington on Your Side.”] “If Washington isn’t gon’ listen to disciplined dissidents, this is the difference: This kid is out.”

It’s very bouncy, not necessarily story-focused. Jefferson doesn’t really have to worry about that because he’s an aristocrat, and he can do whatever he wants. He gets to play a little more. To pack all of that into this story, it’s like, oh man, of course it took you six years to write it. There’s very careful, methodical work going on here.
